One of any marketer’s best practices is to stay attuned to organic search trends to inform strategy, particularly when their industry is in an unprecedented bull market (like ours). In the first edition of Market Mix we dove into the state of Bitcoin SEO leading into the new year. Three months later, here we are, checking in on what’s happened since.
Buckle up.
Back in the second half of December 2020, Bitcoin was just reaching the 26K-30K range for the first time. Crypto Twitter was breaking into one of its funnest periods, but the wider consumer market really hadn’t caught on yet. It took another month and a half before we started to see daily mainstream press coverage, which then brought a new legion of consumer investors into the space.
Google Trends shows this pretty plainly, with the “cryptocurrency” search term peaking in the second week of February.
Searches for “bitcoin” saw similar growth, showing multiple spikes in the first two months of the year. As markets cooled in the latter half of February, search interest followed. Bitcoin’s search volume is at about half of its January peak.
One of the most eye-catching updates in Bitcoin SEO I’d like to point out is the significant increase in SERP results for the bitcoin search term.
What’s a SERP? Quick refresher:
This is what’s happened since we last reviewed in December:
Dec '20: 526 million SERPs
Mar ‘21: 695 million SERPs
That’s a 32.1% increase in websites indexing bitcoin-related pages in the last three months. Wow.
Interestingly, according to SEMrush, overall search volume for bitcoin terms hasn’t changed much, holding strong around 1.8M searches per month in the US. In comparison, search volume for “cryptocurrency” has increased 60.6% between December and March.
Interesting contrast to the data presented by Google Trends above. 🤔
To understand the SEO trends of a search term, it's very important to understand three main keyword categories:
Top search terms
Top search questions
Top related keywords (misspellings, etc.)
For marketers, it’s important to remember that when we talk about SEO, we’re really talking about intention. We want to know what people are looking for in order to be there when they’re looking for it. That’s the key to success.
So what bitcoin related topics are people looking at?

Top 10 “Bitcoin” Search Terms by Volume, Dec 2020 vs. Mar 2021
Key takeaways:
Top three keywords are static over the last three months, but volume has shifted.
“Bitcoin Price” is still the highest volume keyword, by far.
The fourth positioned keyword from December has dropped to the tenth spot, being replaced by some more consumer-driven search queries.
There are now two “bitcoin ATM”-related terms in the top ten search terms

One of my favorite things from SEO research is looking at the Google Search misspellings. Why?
They’re typically pretty hilarious
They actually present some awesome low-hanging fruit SEO opportunities your competition might be overlooking
For example, “biticoin”, “botcoin”, and “itcoin” only combine for about 7,500 searches per month. But in understanding what these people meant to search, you can see that these are pretty high-intent searches that might be worth targeting for your campaigns.
